Shareholder Ed Boucher has been named to the inaugural Michigan Legal 250 by Michigan Lawyers Weekly, recognized in the construction law category among the state's most influential attorneys.
Selena Karim, a current student at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, was one of two summer interns who worked alongside team members at Kotz Sangster this past summer to enhance her skills and gain a deeper understanding of the culture that defines Kotz Sangster. Speaking to Selena, she reflects on her background, time at Kotz Sangster and her advice for future summer clerks.
The Start to a Legal Career
After earning her bachelor’s degree in accounting, Selena moved into real estate and quickly discovered how closely the two worlds overlapped with the law. “As I began reviewing contracts, working with clients and negotiating deals, I wanted to build a career that would allow me to combine these interests,” she said. With her background and experience, Selena highlighted commercial litigation, real estate and business law as her preferred areas of interest, making a summer at Kotz Sangster the perfect fit. She highlighted the firm’s strong reputation, mentorship and complex cases as major indicators of its impact on her future.
Working at Kotz Sangster
Selena was excited to dive into different projects at Kotz Sangster: attend hearings, assist in discovery and legal research, as well as draft pleadings. No single day looked the same. For Selena, this variety of workflow allowed her to grow in her confidence, citing the improvement of her research and writing skills. “It helped me become more confident in my research skills, and be able to analyze case law and apply it to our own cases,” she said. With the day-to-day operations varying greatly, Selena remarks that the biggest skill she’s taken away is being comfortable with shifting focus.
Looking Ahead
Going forward, Selena will remain at Kotz Sangster part-time as she continues her education. Her advice to future summer clerks is simple: ask questions, keep an open mind and get comfortable stepping outside your comfort zone. When the workload gets busy, she recommends a break at her favorite Eastern Market lunch spot – Full Measure Brewing Company.
