Profile & Practice Areas
Jennifer Taylor brings a rare combination of family law practice and business law experience to Kotz Sangster, pairing the judgment of a seasoned family law attorney with the perspective of a corporate and transactional lawyer. She represents individuals and families in divorce and other family law matters, with a particular emphasis on property division, business ownership issues, financial complexity and alternative dispute resolution.
Jennifer is distinguished by the breadth of her experience outside the family courtroom. Over more than two decades in practice, she has owned her own general practice, served as in-house counsel for several Michigan corporations and practiced with multiple Michigan firms, including as a corporate and securities transactional attorney. She has also taught business, contract and constitutional law at the university level. Few family law attorneys bring to their clients both a command of domestic relations practice and the transactional experience of a corporate practitioner.
That experience is directly relevant to the issues that make a divorce difficult to resolve. Jennifer guides clients through property division, closely held business interests, valuation questions and the financial considerations that accompany the end of a marriage, drawing on understanding of how businesses operate and where risk sits. She keeps the process as efficient and constructive as the situation allows.
Among Jennifer’s areas of focus is alternative dispute resolution. She is a collaboratively trained attorney and a state-certified domestic relations mediator and arbitrator, a combination of qualifications many family law practitioners do not hold. Having served as the neutral in other parties’ disputes, she understands what makes an agreement hold and where a matter is likely to come apart. Jennifer works to resolve disputes by agreement whenever possible, and advocates firmly in court when it is not.
Clients value Jennifer’s clear communication, preparation and her ability to build trust quickly during a difficult time. For individuals facing a divorce that involves a business, significant assets or financial complexity, she offers the advantage of counsel who has practiced on the business side of law and sat in the mediator’s chair, and prides herself in helping people move forward with security, hope and opportunity.
